Natural 4x4 — Unglazed Zellige Tile
A warm, sandy bisque with real texture across the surface. This is fired clay in its rawest form — no glaze, no glass, just the color the earth turns in the kiln. Natural sits apart from every other tile in our range: where a glazed color is fixed the moment it's fired, Natural keeps changing, deepening and patinating with age and use the way old terra cotta does. Up close, each tile carries visible flecks and variation straight from the clay body itself, along with a matte, slightly porous surface that no glaze ever produces.
Sold as individual tiles rather than mounted sheets, Natural 4×4 is the classic zellige field format — suited to kitchen backsplashes, powder rooms, and fireplace surrounds where a warm, earthen texture is the goal. Nine tiles make up one square foot. It pairs beautifully with unlacquered brass, walnut, and lime plaster.
As an unglazed material, Natural is more porous than our glazed zellige and requires sealing both before and after grouting, particularly in wet installations — we're happy to walk through the right sealer for your specific application. Expect the surface to develop a deeper patina with time and use; this is characteristic of the material, not a flaw. As with all handmade zellige, no two tiles are ever quite alike, and because these are individual pieces rather than pre-set sheets, installation allows for custom layout and spacing to suit your design. We recommend ordering ten percent beyond your total square footage to allow for cuts and pattern matching.
