Hand-Painted Black & Ivory Open Amphora Vase with Copper & Brass Metalwork
Size: 11"W x 18"H x 11"D - (Mouth Opening: 4"W)
SKU#: VA155
An open-topped amphora vase in the Fassi tradition of Fez, hand-thrown with two large handles and a wide flared rim. The lower body is painted in bold black brushwork on an ivory ground — loose botanical sprays, large florals, and gestural leaf forms that feel more expressive and free-hand than the formal geometric pieces. The warm crazing and patina come from being made the traditional way.
The upper half is a different story: the neck and rim are fully encased in heavy hand-worked copper and brass metalwork, several bands deep, detailed with embossed lozenges, draped swags, beaded wire, and applied plaques in brass and silvered metal. The two handles are wrapped in metal to match. It's as much a metalwork object as a ceramic one.
The combination of gestural black painting and heavy copper cladding gives this a rawer, more dramatic look than the lidded urns — bold enough to anchor a shelf or floor vignette on its own. Works in traditional, Moorish, bohemian, and eclectic rooms, and holds its own in a more modern space too.
