Gris 4x4 — Charcoal Grey Zellige Tile
A deep, slate-toned charcoal grey. There's a version of this color on the walls of old riads at dusk, just before the lamps come on — dark enough to disappear into shadow, warm enough to never read as cold. Gris sits between our neutrals and Noir, holding that same quiet weight without Noir's full drama. Up close, the surface carries a fine, stippled texture, and each tile shifts from a cooler blue-grey to a warmer charcoal — the kind of depth that changes with the light in a room rather than sitting flat under it.
Sold as individual tiles rather than mounted sheets, Gris 4×4 is the classic zellige field format — suited to kitchen backsplashes, powder rooms, hammam-style showers, and fireplace surrounds where a dark, grounding neutral is the goal. Nine tiles make up one square foot. It pairs beautifully with unlacquered brass, walnut, and honed limestone.
As with all handmade zellige, no two tiles are ever quite alike — the natural variation in tone, texture, and edge shape from tile to tile is the hallmark of the craft, not a flaw. Because these are individual pieces rather than pre-set sheets, installation allows for custom layout and spacing to suit your design. We recommend ordering ten percent beyond your total square footage to allow for cuts and pattern matching, and sealing prior to grouting for wet installations.
